Even though it has “folders” in its name, liquidFOLDERS aims to do away with folders and replace them with something called stores. You can create stores, import the files you want into those stores, view the files in the stores, and easily look for files saved in the stores.

To get started with liquidFOLDERS you will have to download a 22.2MB executable and run it. A setup wizard that asks you to pick between several supported languages (English, French, Germany, and Spanish) will take it from there and guide you through the installation process. liquidFOLDERS can be installed on top of 32 and 64-bit editions of Windows 7, Vista, and XP.

Once the installation process completes you will be presented with a “Welcome to liquidFOLDERS” window that invites you to create up to three stores. If you don’t want to create stores right then and there you don’t have to; you can easily create stores at a later time.

The liquidFOLDERS interface is very much similar to Windows Explorer’s interface and that is a good thing – it means even a novice will immediately feel at home. At the bottom of the interface, liquidFOLDERS displays all your removable volumes. Above that it displays all the stores you create, and at the top it presents buttons for creating a new store, opening FileDrop, opening the Filter pane, and opening the inspector pane.

When you create a store you will be asked to pick a store type: internal (the index and all the files are stored locally), external (the index and all the files are stored externally), and hybrid (the index and files are stored externally, a copy is stored internally). Once you create a store, you can import files into that store. You can do that by clicking “Import a folder” or by using the FileDrop feature. FileDrop is a floating window onto which you can drop all the files you want to import.

The Filter pane lets you search for files within all stores or within the current store. Searches are performed based on the query you provide and based on the conditions you select – there’s a whole list of conditions to choose from.
The Inspector pane is a preview pane. It will display a preview of whatever file you select, as well as a bit of info about that file.

You can evaluate the functionality liquidFOLDERS has to offer for free for a period of 30 days.

liquidFOLDERS provides an efficient means of managing your files and easily locating the files you want.

Pros

liquidFOLDERS features an interface similar to Windows Explorer. Easily create stores; pick the type of stores you want to create (internal, external, or hybrid). Import folders into a store; use FileDrop to import files into a store. Search for files within a store or within all stores. The Inspector pane displays info on a selected file.

Cons

Free to use for an evaluation period of 30 days; nag screen.
